One of the most fundamental phrases you’ll need is how to ask “Where is X?”. You can say: Xはどこですか？ (X wa doko desu ka?) which literally translates to “Where is X?”. Just replace ‘X’ with the place you’re looking for, like “駅はどこですか？ (Eki wa doko desu ka?)” for “Where is the station?”.

Once you’ve asked, you might hear instructions like “Go straight,” “Turn left,” or “Turn right.” For these, remember: まっすぐ行って、左/右に曲がってください。 (Massugu itte, hidari/migi ni magatte kudasai.) This means “Please go straight, and turn left/right.” “まっすぐ (massugu)” means straight, “左 (hidari)” is left, and “右 (migi)” is right.

Finally, understanding the distance can also be key. If you want to ask if something is far, you can use: 遠いですか？ (Tooi desu ka?) meaning “Is it far?”. Often, the answer might be “近いですよ (Chikai desu yo),” which means “It’s close.” Practicing these simple phrases will make a huge difference in your ability to navigate Japan with confidence.
